Essay about Symptom, Causes, Prevention, and Treatment of...
Gingivitis is a form of periodontal disease and is when the gums are inflamed. Periodontal disease is inflammation and infection that destroys the tissues of the gums in the teeth (MedlinePlus n. pag.). Gingivitis typically precedes periodontitis but it is important to understand that not all gingivitis progresses to periodontitis (ââ¬Å"Gum Diseaseâ⬠n. pag.). Most of the time gingivitis is from not brushing and flossing which may cause medical disorders or the use of certain drugs. Gingivitis is a common disease in which the gums turn red, swollen, and bleeds. Gingivitis is sometimes not detected and barely causes any pain in the beginning stages. Above all, gingivitis is caused by the effects of long-standing plaque deposits. Plaque is a sticky material made of bacteria, mucus, and food debris that grows on the parts of the teeth that are visible. Plaque is a major factor of tooth decay and without removal it turns into a hard deposit called tartar. Plaque is the primary cause of gum disease, however other factors can contribute to gum disease as well (MedlinePlus n. pag.). Other factors that contribute to gum disease are plaque-induced gingivitis, drug-induced gingivitis, and gingivitis due to vitamin deficiency, gingivitis due to infections, gingivitis due to pregnancy, gingivitis due to menopause, gingivitis due to leukemia, and gingivitis due to an impacted tooth (Pericoronitis). Plaque-induced gingivitis is from lack of brushing and flossing which is the most common cause of gingivitis. Drug-induced gingivitis is when different drugs cause gum tissue to overgrow, so that eliminating plaque becomes more challenging, and sometimes develops gingivitis. Vitamin deficiencies, in rare cases, can also cause gingivitis. Viral Infections turn the gums a shade of bright red and cause many small white or yellow sores to form inside the mouth can also cause gingivitis. Nevertheless, ging ivitis that is not treated may lead to periodontitis which is a more severe gum disease than gingivitis that can eventually result in tooth loss. Plaque -induced gingivitis, drug- induced gingivitis, vitamin deficiency, infection, and pregnancy, menopause, Leukemia, and an impacted tooth (Pericoronitis) are some of the causes of gingivitis (ââ¬Å"Gingivitis: Periodontalâ⬠n. pag.).
